Coop Placement and Volunteering at Learning Hub Limerick
Every year the Learning Hub takes on a number of placement students for periods of three to six months. We take an average of 15 students each year and our placement students are interviewed and all complete Garda (police) vetting before they beginning with us. Students on placement here are considered to be members of staff and, once they have completed their induction and training, they are given a wide variety of tasks and activities to do. These include assisting in the delivery of existing Hub daily and weekly programmes, helping with activities, researching, designing and developing new programmes as well as taking lead roles in our annual events such as the Halloween Haunted House or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Placement students provide the Learning Hub with crucial manpower and expertise, without which, we would find it very difficult to deliver the quality of the work that we do. However, the placement students also benefit hugely from the experience. They learn responsibility and reliability, as well as a developing organizational and communication skills. They also develop knowledge of IT, have access to a wide range of general and more specific software and are required to learn on the job. They are also given the opportunity to hone their research and presentation skills too.
We are fortunate that we can draw on students from the University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College and Limerick Institute of Technology, as well as Limerick College of Further Education and even institutions further afield. We have benefitted enormously from the placement students working with us over the years but the students have benefitted too. So many students have enjoyed their experience here, telling us how much they’ve learned and how sorry they are to leave us when their placements end. Many of them stay in touch and come back to us for different activities. We love it when they come back to pay us a visit!
